Don’t Judge Me

OK. Maybe you wouldn’t have done it, but I did. I really don’t need to be judged by you for it.

Yes, I have been to see Barry Manilow, Neil Sedaka, and David Cassidy in concert. And, no, not all at the same time.   I’ve seen America, the Beach Boys, Dan Fogelberg, and James Taylor. I’ve seen the Judd’s, Juice Newton, and even Air Supply.  I seen Stevie Ray Vaughn and Huey Lewis and the News.  I’ve seen Lee Greenwood, Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods (remember ‘Billy, don’t be a hero’?), and Toby Keith.

I am a child of the 60’s, came of age in the 70’s and 80’s, and I have never been to a rock concert. There. I said it. It’s not really even on my bucket list. Hey, as it is I tell my husband to turn the TV down all the time. He’s a retired fire chief and all those years riding engines have left him hard of hearing. If I can’t handle a too-loud TV I don’t think I could deal with a rock concert.

I remember when I was in my 20’s thinking Stevie Ray was too loud and I didn’t like how I could feel the music in my chest; it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my body. And SRV wasn’t full-on rock, God rest his soul. Nah. I think I’m going to go to my grave never having gone to a rock concert.

I kind of feel like my concert days are behind me. I might still go to a Broadway show, or the ballet, or the symphony, or a play, or some other kind of live performance, but concert, no maybe not. Now, if either of my granddaughters was in a band, I’d make an exception, but I think that’s about the only reason I’m going to a concert at this point in my life.

How about you? What concerts do you go to? Any concerts on your bucket list? I promise not to judge you!

They started playing that rock and roll music

Any old way you choose it

It’s got a backbeat you can’t lose it

Any old way you use it

It’s gotta be rock and roll music

If you wanna dance with me

If you wanna dance with me

The Beach Boys

  1. My first concert was Al Stewart. My second was Iron Maiden. I’ve seen Heart something like six times now, and Metallica three times, and Ringo Starr, and Eric Clapton, and … well, here:

In my middle age, I’ve come not to enjoy the large crowds at stadium shows. I did go see Iron Maiden again three years ago, and it was a wonderful show, better than any of the shows I saw them play in the 80s. But ick, the crowd. So lately I’ve been more drawn to shows in smaller venues. This year, I’ve seen Pokey LaFarge and Lake Street Dive. Look them up on YouTube.
