Halloween Hoopla

Every year I wonder what Breezy will choose to be for Halloween. Her costumes are always done to the max and are so cute. Or rather, she’s so cute in them!

So far in her lifetime she’s been: a lady bug, a jack-o-lantern, Super girl, Doc McStuffins, the green ‘Wicked Witch of the West” from the Wizard of Oz, Izzy from Jake and the Neverland Pirates, a Day of the Dead girl, and Hermione Granger from Harry Potter.

I think my favorite was Doc McStuffins when she was four. She loved Doc. She’d asked for a Doc Mobile for Christmas that year. It was a little mobile doctor’s station she could wheel around healing toys.  That’s what Doc does.

One day during the holidays before Christmas Papa and I stopped by to visit. She came out of her room and down the hall. The first thing she said was, in a loud sing-songy voice, “I am sorry to announce that I am getting a Doc McStuffins mobile for Christmas.”

She wasn’t really sorry she was getting it. She was sorry that she’d been snooping in her parents closet and found it! Or rather, her parents were sorry! I have gotten many laughs over the years from her big announcement.

I mentioned it to her the other day. She said, “Yeah, mom said she was going to take it back to the store, but she didn’t!”  Her parents have since taken to hiding Santa’s gifts in the attic.

On Halloween that year her sister and she came over to “trick or treat” at our house before heading out on their big adventure. I took them outside for some pictures. I told her to do a video. She sang the word “video” then began singing the words (sort of) from Selena Gomez’s song “Who Says?” She loped around the yard in her Doc outfit while she sang.

Who says you’re not perfect?

Who says you’re not worth it?

Who says you’re the only one that’s hurting?

Trust me.

That’s the price of beauty.

Who says you’re not pretty?

Who says you’re not beautiful?

Who says?

It’s a song we used to sing at the top of our lungs in my car. I thought it was a great song to build a young girl’s confidence.

It’s probably my favorite Halloween memory thus far.

Breezy says she’ll be a zombie softball player this year. It seems like it’s gonna stick. I went to Goodwill and bought a red softball shirt and red pants that she could shred and dirty up in true zombie fashion.

I found a red Hello Kitty ball cap at my house that she’d never worn. Knowing she’d never wear a Hello Kitty cap as a zombie, I ordered a patch that says “zombie outbreak response team.” Papa glued it on to completely obscure Hello Kitty. We’ll see if she wears it.

I told her mom Wal-mart has jugs of Halloween blood for $4.95.  Can’t wait to see how the costume turns out.

After her parents bought a house in a wonderful neighborhood for “trick or treating,” they don’t come to see me before going out. I stop by their house each year so I can get some great pictures.

Breezy is 8 now. Don’t know how much longer she’ll want to dress up. I’m going to enjoy every year of it while I can. It’s one of my favorite times each year.

If you have a little one who dresses up for Halloween, be in the moment with them. Relish these times.

“When witches go riding and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers ’tis near Halloween.'”
